  40. Does anyone know anything about A43YY and a QSL route?  I have
  41. been getting QSL cards from Japan but I am not the QSL manager.
  42. I know how the misinformation started - quite innocently and
  43. understandably - but would like to tell people how to reach this
  44. op when I send their cards back.  The W6GO/K6HHD list gives A47RS
  45. (the A4 club station) as the route for A43XX, but I dunno whether
  46. XX and YY are related in any way.  I have the latest international
  47. callbook and A43YY is not listed there.

  74. A friend of mine asked me this question, and I do not know the answer.
  75. If one has an antenna (say a vertical or something, as opposed to a
  76. beam) that is x feet above ground level, how does one compute the
  77. approximate coverage area of that antenna (in square miles)? For
  78. example, see the following diagram

  305. This may be a case where the "new" and "great" technology is working
  306. against you. The typical solid-state ricebox of today is NOT built to
  307. operate in the near field of a strong RF source...

  309. An older "hollow-state" rig will not have the same problems, though it
  310. is more likely to have a 1240KHz 2nd IF, which makes for real fun...
  311.  
  312. About 1976, I helped a ham install a dipole for 75 meters, with one
  313. end of a long concatonary arch (hey, I never said I could type or
  314. spell ;^) attached at the radome of the FM antenna on a 350 foot
  315. broadcast tower with the AM running.... yep, 1240KHz! The antenna was
  316. flat-topped at 150 feet up, directly over the transmitter shed. He had
  317. the strongest signal on 75 at the time...unless you count W2HCW and
  318. his 3-element beam! His SP600 wasn't bothered by the 1240KHz STRONG
  319. local signal.
  320.  
  321. I don't know if a modern solid-state rig can deal with all the RF
  322. floating around, but a tube rig without a 1240 IF sure could...
  323. So, take the less expensive route and buy an older HF rig at a HamFest
  324. and stop worrying...

  342. Hi, everybody.  Well, its about spring, and that means we are 
  343. getting ready for the local HamFest round here.  Im looking
  344. at the hamfest flyer, and one on the events listed is
  345. The Royal Order of Whoff Hong Induction.  Well ya see, Im kind
  346. of a new guy, and dunno what thats all about.  I asked about it 
  347. the local 2 meter repeater,  and you should have heard the 
  348. snickers and snorks.  I quickly surmised that it was a secret.
  349.    So keeping with the spirit of fun, I will not just ask
  350. what this is all about, but I do have a few questions:

  352. 1. Is it something that the OFs will enjoy at us new guys expense?
  353.  
  354. 2. Is it an event that I would prefer no one had a camera at?
  355.  
  356. 3. Would I be any less likely to get home that night than any
  357.    other night?

  359. 4. Will my health insurance cover anything thats likely to happen?
  360.  
  361. 5. Is there a potential for any embarassment to any involved?

  363. 6. Could I be black-mailed for being there?

  385. In a recent posting, I mentioned that purchased an Omni VI within the last
  386. month. Since that posting, several hams have replied asking for my opinions
  387. of the radio.

  389. One of those hams was asking for my comparison of the Omni VI with the
  390. FT-990 since he was contemplating the purchase of one or the other rigs.
  391.  
  392. To help him and others who might be in the same quandry, has anyone
  393. performed any side by side comparisons or have direct experience with each
  394. radio?

  396. If so, please post your likes/dislikes about each.
